Clinicians Matter More Than Ever!
A recent CDC report from the 2025 West Texas measles outbreak found that nearly 1 in 5 patients required hospitalization. Among those hospitalized, 91% were children, most had no significant underlying medical conditions, and all were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status.
At the same time, a recent Harvard poll found that clinicians remain the most trusted source of health information for the public.
Together, these findings serve as an important reminder that vaccine-preventable diseases can still cause serious illness and that healthcare professionals play a critical role in helping patients understand risks, evaluate evidence, and make informed decisions based on their individual health needs.
As nurse practitioners, we have an important opportunity to provide trusted, evidence-based information and support patients in making informed healthcare decisions.

Trent Carter, MSN, FNP-BC, CARN-AP is the June Member in the Spotlight from Region 4!
Trent belongs to NMNPC to “support the cause,” believing that nurse practitioners (NPs) play huge roles in improving access to care across New Mexico, especially in rural and underserved communities. He says that NMNPC gives NPs a voice and helps advocate for the profession, patients and the future of healthcare in New Mexico. Trent is originally from Texas, but a large part of his career and mission has been focused on serving communities across New Mexico and it’s become home for him. He attended Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where he completed his BSN, and later earned his NP degree from the University of Cincinnati.

The USDA has confirmed New Mexico’s first case of New World screwworm in a dog from Lea County. New World screwworm is a flesh-eating parasite that can affect livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans. Animal owners are encouraged to regularly check animals for wounds or unusual infestations and report concerns to their veterinarian immediately. Early detection is critical to preventing spread and protecting animal health.
