Bird Treatment & Learning Center
We care and advocate for Alaska's wild birds through rehabilitation, education and outreach.
Bird TLC has been caring for Alaska’s wild birds since 1988 when Dr. James R. Scott, DVM, began treating sick and injured birds at his veterinary clinic. Since then, we have grown to become Alaska’s busiest rehabilitation clinic, taking in approximately 600 birds a year from across the state. In addition to rehabilitating wild birds, we offer interactive, science-based education programs to schools, community organizations, and tour groups.
This young man likes to visit from time to time. We’re always happy to see him. We appreciate his nonchalance.
Volume up for the full experience!
This juvenile raven keeps himself amused and us entertained by ringing his bell, one of several enrichment items we've given him. When we have corvids (ravens, magpies, jays) in our care, we make sure they have plenty to do to keep their busy minds occupied.

It’s time for this week’s wrap-up!
We admitted 30 patients to the rehabilitation clinic, including songbird nestlings and fledglings, and multiple waterbird chicks. In a case of “this one is not quite like the others,” this large-footed Glaucous-winged Gull stands out among the smaller and more common Short-billed Gulls. We think his oversized feet just make him even cuter! Plus, there’s a fledgling raven in the house causing a ruckus and keeping everyone entertained with his antics.
The Education team—both humans and Ambassador Birds—kept busy with two public programs, a private Raptor Experience, and programs for the Cook Inlet Tribal Council’s summer camp and tour groups at Bird TLC. They also managed to fit in a program at the Alaska Public Lands Information Center with assistance from our Avian Teen Crew members.

Ambassador Frost may make his debut at the Ambassador Bird program on Friday, 6/19! He's been practicing and gaining confidence in front of a crowd.
Don't worry, if Frost gets stage fright, we have other Ambassadors in the wings!

Watch Dr. Karen gives the Bald Eagle, who was injured in a fight with another eagle, her first physical therapy session. Dr. Karen said, with admiration in her voice, that this eagle is a "very tough bird."

June 15th is - a day to celebrate nature by capturing its beauty and drama with your camera. Please share your photos of Alaska’s wild birds with us and tell us what was happening when you took the photo.
This is also a day to ask ourselves what we can do to conserve and protect the wild birds we love to photograph. Check out our tips on how you can help protect Alaska’s wild birds here: https://bit.ly/4xr2DyV

What happened this week at Bird TLC? A lot!
We admitted 42 new patients to the rehabilitation clinic, most of whom are orphaned seabirds.
A few of the other patients currently in our care include:
🦅An adult Bald Eagle who fractured her ulna during an aerial fight with another eagle that ended when she slammed into a tree.
🦉An adorable juvenile Northern Saw-whet Owl, found on the walking trail behind South Anchorage High School.
🦉An adult Northern Saw-whet Owl (also adorable!) who was found in the road in Seward and driven to Anchorage by his rescuers—thank you!
Not to be outdone by rehabilitation, our education staff, volunteers, and Avian Teen Crew members hustled this week, hosting programs at:
🐦⬛The Z.J. Loussac Library, Scott and Wesley Gerrish Library in Girdwood, Chugiak-Eagle River Library, and Mountain View Library
