The Center for Workforce Excellence Director, Abe Hernandez, just wrapped up a productive trip to Bethel! It was a great opportunity to meet with the Association of Village Council Presidents and Yuut Elitnaurviat to discuss workforce development needs and explore new opportunities to expand remote services across the region. We’re excited about the partnerships taking shape and look forward to working together to increase access to education, career readiness, and workforce development opportunities for communities throughout Western Alaska.

Hear from Mary Ann Egbert, APRN! Mary Ann is an experienced nurse practitioner with over 50 years of experience working across hospitals, the military, schools, and private practice.

Learn what it takes to work with animals from Anthony Vrolyk, a retired 23-year Air Force veteran and Senior Program Instructor (lead dog trainer) at Paws for Purple Hearts, Alaska.

Get insider insight into community leadership from Mayor Edna DeVries, a long-time public servant who has served the Mat-Su borough as Mayor, Mayor of Palmer, Council Member, Assembly Member, and State Senator.

🎉 Congratulations to Ma'Ya Blount, Hye Suh, and Janel Harris! 🎉

We are proud to celebrate three outstanding leaders recently elected to the 2026 Alaska Adult Education Association (AAEA) Board of Directors!

✨ Ma'Ya Blount was elected as the Anchorage Region Representative. As the Center for Workforce Excellence’s (CfWE) Anchorage Academic and Distance Learning Manager at Nine Star, Ma'Ya continues to demonstrate exceptional leadership, dedication, and passion for advancing adult education opportunities throughout our community.

✨ Former Nine Star team member Hye Suh was elected as the Stakeholder Representative (Statewide). Throughout the years, Hye wore many hats with us at Nine Star and continues to be a passionate advocate for education and workforce development across Alaska.

✨ Janel Harris was elected as the South-Central/Kodiak Region Representative. As a Maritime Instructor and Adult Education Instructor with Kenai Peninsula College: Kachemak Bay Campus, Janel brings valuable experience and dedication to adult learners across Alaska.

AAEA President Heidi Biskeborn shared that these leaders bring “valuable experience, insight, and leadership” that will help advance accessible, high-quality learning opportunities for adults across the state.
