Have you seen a Butternut? Also known as the White Walnut (Juglans cinerea), this beautiful native tree is becoming increasingly rare due to a fungal disease called Butternut Canker.

ForestHer NC is partnering with Adventure Scientists to locate and protect these trees, and we need your help as citizen scientists!

We’re hosting a Field Day this September, but the prep starts now. To join the field day, volunteers just need to complete an online training beforehand. So, next Step: Join our upcoming webinar on June 26th to meet the project designer, ask questions, and learn how to get involved! Use the QR code in the post to reserve your spot today!

At ForestHer NC, our strength comes from our community. These are the women who step up, ask questions, and champion the stewardship of North Carolina’s woodlands. So, this month, we are thrilled to spotlight one of our dedicated board members, Lynda Turbeville, whose journey perfectly captures the spirit of what we do.

When Lynda unexpectedly inherited her family’s farm, she faced a challenge familiar to many women landowners: navigating a historically male-dominated industry while figuring out exactly where to start.

Lynda found a home in ForestHer NC, drawing strength from the unique camaraderie, education, and shared purpose of women landowners supporting one another. Today, she is helping lead the organization as one of our esteemed board members to ensure other women have those same vital resources.

Join ForestHer NC for an exclusive, interactive webinar featuring a guest project designer from Adventure Scientists! We'll cover why butternut restoration matters, how Adventure Scientists is leading the charge, and what to expect at our upcoming, hands-on Butternut Field Day at the North Carolina Arboretum with Adventure Scientists this September.

The native butternut is facing severe threats from butternut canker. Finding healthy, resilient trees is vital to saving the species—and we need your eyes on the ground. So, our friends, Adventure Scientists, have launched new projects that place you at the forefront of community-based science to protect and restore American butternut trees.

Whether you are a woodland owner, a passionate naturalist, or simply curious about forest health, this session is designed to prep you for the September field day.

Please note: This does not replace official Adventure Scientist training. It is meant to be a supplemental, educational opportunity.

We hope to see you there!

The man, the myth, the legend: Sir David Attenborough.

Today, ForestHer NC joins the world in wishing a very happy 100th birthday to Sir David Attenborough. And what an incredible 100 years it's been!

Sir David has given a voice to our Earth, and by doing so, allowed many of us to connect or reconnect with the natural world. For generations, he has not only educated us on the intricacies of our ecosystems but tirelessly championed their protection. From the smallest seedling to the largest forest, his dedication reminds us that we are all part of one interconnected living system, and that we must protect what we love.

There’s not much to say other than, thank you, Sir David, for inspiring us to look closer, listen longer, and protect the wild places we call home. Cheers to the future. May we all continue to give a voice to this Earth for generations to come.
