Happy Juneteenth from CCSD!
Juneteenth, or Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a national holiday that celebrates the emancipation of the final slaves in the United States. Following the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 from President Abraham Lincoln, news has traveled throughout the country and on June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived at Galveston, Texas, where Major General Gordon Granger read the order that freed the remaining slaves, numbering over 250,000.

The response to this upcoming event from educators, community leaders, and LSGT members has been so tremendous that in-person registration for the event is closed; HOWEVER, it will be livestreamed and available for on-demand viewing on the CCSD YouTube channel!
At CCSD, literacy is the heart of everything we do. We are committed to building, promoting, and nourishing a Culture of Literacy across all of Athens-Clarke County because everyone — every parent and guardian, every educator, every community partner, every organization, every neighbor, every advocate — has a role in helping our children, our future, thrive.
Tune in on YouTube from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, for "Culture of Literacy: The Next Chapter" to learn more about our plans for literacy in the 2026-27 school year and beyond under Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Scott's leadership and how you fit into that work. We’ll also take a look at our literacy data and hear from experts with the Get Georgia Reading Campaign, as we look to move the needle on improving early literacy rates in Clarke County.
Thank you to our community for so enthusiastically supporting our district in building an Athens-wide Culture of Literacy! And stay tuned for much more!

Scenes from Athens Community Career Academy's Summer Camps! Rising 9th graders were able to take in previews of pathways available at ACCA, from healthcare to cosmetology, from firefighting to culinary arts, and more! Hands-on experience in these environments will help motivate students and help them consider what pathways they could seek when they reach 10th grade to pursue these same pathways at ACCA!

The building committee tasked with leading the revitalization project for the historic West Broad School Complex has recommended a revitalization plan to the Clarke County Board of Education to include:
• A renovated Minor Street building to house additional Athens Community Career Academy classrooms and office spaces and community meeting rooms.
• A renovated Campbell Lane building to house student gathering space and host events
• Construction of a brand-new building to house the relocated Advanced Manufacturing and Welding pathway lab space and a lab for the new Construction pathway for CCSD students
• A memory plaza/courtyard between the back sides of the Minor Street and Campbell Lane buildings with historical markers and plaques
• A multipurpose recreational field
• Additional parking and a loop for buses and fire trucks.
This revitalization concept emerged from a group of plans developed during the public design charrette in March 2026. CCSD is moving forward with obtaining pricing for the plan and is currently eyeing a start on construction in early 2027 with the intent to have the campus fully open and ready for use by the start of the 2028-29 school year.
