This idiom comes from sailing. New sailors had to be taught how to use the many ropes on a ship. Today, “learn the ropes” means learning something new. 🪢

“I only eat dessert for breakfast once in a blue moon.”
The phrase is connected to the rare idea of a “blue moon.” Older uses of “blue moon” described something unusual or unlikely, and over time the phrase came to mean something that does not happen often. Today, many people connect it to the rare occurrence of an extra full moon in a season or calendar month. 🌙

From Seoul to Austin, Jeewon Kim came to UT Austin with her husband, who began a Ph.D. program here. Through the English Language Center, she found more than English practice; she found new ways to connect, explore campus, and speak with less fear.
“The program itself was worth it not only for learning English, but also for learning about U.S. culture,” Jeewon said.
After completing her courses, she hopes to communicate more easily with researchers working in her field. 🤘🌎
