If you’re in Austin you probably know that parts of Barton Creek that have been dry for years is currently experiencing flowing water.

But have you ever wondered why the creek dries out so fast even after it seems like a lot of rain has fallen?

Where does the water go?

And why does it seem like it used to be easier to keep the creek flowing than it has been in the last decade?

Many parents think games like tag, capture the flag, or other outdoor running games are just a way for kids to burn off energy.

But every time children play games like this, they’re making rapid decisions: Where do I run? Who’s chasing me? Do I change direction? Do I keep going?

Researchers often refer to these as executive function skills - the mental processes that help us plan, adapt, focus, and make decisions under pressure.

To a child, it feels like play but to their developing brain, it’s practice.

That’s one reason outdoor play is so valuable. The lessons often look like fun and they ARE fun.

Research consistently shows that outdoor play supports children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Time spent exploring, building, climbing, imagining, and navigating the natural world helps develop skills that are difficult to replicate indoors.

Some of the things kids may lose when outdoor play becomes rare:

• Confidence built through real-world challenges

• The ability to assess and manage risk

• Strong balance, coordination, and body awareness

• Creativity that comes from unstructured play

• Patience and sustained attention

• Curiosity about the natural world

• Opportunities to solve problems independently

• Resilience after failure, falls, mistakes, and setbacks

• Face-to-face social skills and conflict resolution

• A sense of wonder

• Connection to seasons, weather, and local ecosystems

• Quiet moments away from screens and constant stimulation

• Physical strength and endurance

• A feeling of freedom and autonomy

• Childhood memories rooted in adventure
