College decisions are landing in inboxes everywhere—and for a lot of families, they’re not the news they hoped for. Rejections and waitlists from a growing list of schools that have become harder to get into. Today is what's called “Ivy Day.” It gets the headlines when the Ivy League schools release their decisions. But the reality is bigger than one day, or one set of schools. I’m reminded of a question I once got at a talk: "What does my student have to do to get into a place like Stanford? More classes, more leadership, more activities?" The truth is, a student can do all of that, and still be one of a dozen equally strong applicants competing for a single seat. That’s the reality of this process. It’s not a verdict on your child. It’s a numbers game. The better question is: Why did they do all of it in the first place? If it was to explore, to grow, to learn, that’s exactly what high school should be. It shouldn’t be a four-year tryout for college or an attempt to impress an anonymous reader on the other side of the application. This moment is hard as I tell families on this book tour, including earlier this month at @stmarysepiscopalschool. But it’s also a reminder to widen the lens. There isn’t just one path, and there isn’t just one place where a student can thrive.
