Two nights ago, a small group of brand-new fiddlers in Henrico played their first notes. 🎻

I wish you could have seen their faces. There's a particular kind of grin that only appears the first time a tune comes out of an instrument you're holding — somewhere between disbelief and pure delight.

This is why I teach. Not to make professionals — to make musicians. There's a difference, and the second one is open to absolutely everyone.

Tomorrow night, something small and rather special begins in Henrico. 🎻

A handful of complete beginners — people who've always wanted to play the fiddle but never quite found the door in — are picking up their instruments for the very first time, together.

No sheet music. No prior experience. No "musical talent" required (I don't believe in it anyway — I believe in ears, and everyone's got those). Just curiosity, community, and the joy of making music with other people.

We're keeping the group small on purpose, and there's room for one or two more founding members.

What an afternoon at Thistlerock. 🎻🍯

Thank you to every fiddler who came out to Keswick today, and to John and the Thistlerock family for making us so welcome among the hives and the mead. There's something about a room of people learning a tune by ear together — somewhere in the middle of it, strangers become a band.

This Sunday I'll be at Thistlerock Mead Co in Keswick for my Slow Down To Speed Up Scottish fiddle workshop — and there's still a place or two left with your name on it.

No sheet music. No pressure. Just your ears, your fiddle, and a tune that's travelled all the way from the Highlands to the Blue Ridge. We'll slow everything right down, let the tune settle into your hands, and then watch how quickly it takes flight. That's the secret in the name.

󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I’m going home to Argyll this July — and I’d love for some of you to join me.

This July 18–26, I’m returning to the Scottish Highlands as a co-host on a small,intimate retreat based on the shores of Loch Awe in Argyll. A group of us — all with a love of Scotland and its living heritage — will be spending a week experiencing the Highlands in a way that goes far beyond a typical visit.

🌅 Morning and evening yoga on the shores of the loch to greet and close each day

This is not a package tour. It’s a small group of people experiencing Scotland slowly, deeply, and with music at its heart.
