When art supports learning and learning becomes art ๐จ
In Waldorf education, students record and consolidate what they learned in a focused block of study, called 'main lesson', in a main lesson book.
Why?
๐Through this intensive work, students better retain the subject matter over time.
๐ Through creating their own writing and illustrations, learning becomes more visible and meaningful.
๐ The main lesson book becomes the tangible fruit of a main lesson block.
๐ Students get to engage deeply and artistically with the subject matter, rather than rushing through a fragmented coverage of it.
We're happy to share a few delightful pages of our high school students' main lesson books from the past few months! ๐

This event had parents passing tissues around!
On the last day of school, our first graders graciously sent off our twelfth graders on their journey beyond Austin Waldorf School. It was the beloved Rose Ceremony, Part Two.
Part One happened in August, when the twelfth graders welcomed the brand-new first graders at the start of their journey through the grades.
In August, the seniors handed the first graders a rose, and this time, it was the other way around. ๐น
Seeing each of our 34 seniors walk across the stage hand in hand with their first-grade buddy was just the loveliest of sights. No wonder it is one of the most beloved Waldorf traditions.

Raise your sunflower if you're a rising first grader! ๐ป
For some of our Kindergarten children, the last day of school was a very special one. During the traditional Sunflower Ceremony, they celebrated their passage from Kindergarten into the grades by crossing the symbolic wooden bridge.
These children have grown so much during their time in our Waldorf kindergarten and it will be a delight to see them assume their new roles as freshly minted first graders when the new school year arrives. โจ
But first, they will enjoy a well-deserved summer break! ๐

โจ We proudly present: our class of 2026! โจ
Each and every one of these 34 students - our largest graduating class ever! - has come to the end of their journey at our school and become exactly who they were meant to be.
This is also the beginning of a new journey. Their Waldorf education has equipped them with a wide range of skills, knowledge, and experiences, giving each of them what they need to take the next step in their lives.
Whether they are taking a gap year or pursuing studies in engineering, business, international relations, communications, psychology, and many other fields, they are headed toward exciting futures at institutions such as UT Austin, Durham University (UK), the University of Navarra (Spain), the University of California, Davis, and Texas State University.
It is profoundly hopeful to see these remarkable young adults walk into the world with purpose, knowing they will bring compassion, care and a human touch to everything they do.
We are so proud of them, and while we will sorely miss them in our high school, we wish each of them the very best in their journey beyond AWS!

โMy child appears to be a chopsticks expert!โ
One of our kindergarten moms could not believe her eyes when she brought her child to an Asian restaurant with her: he had absolutely no problems using chopsticks. ๐
Little did she know that he had been practicing every Wednesday! In our Moongarden, that is rice day. The children enjoy their brown rice with seaweed, cucumber, sesame seed and soy sauce. Their favorite part though? Using chopsticks! Needless to say, they have become very proficient at it over the course of the year. ๐

Why does the spelling of Maypole matter so much? ๐
So that youโre not misled, like one of our 2nd graders, into thinking there will be lots of โMapleโ syrup at the event! ๐
Last Friday, all of our kindergarten and grades classes donned their flower crowns and festive spring outfits for this beautiful annual Waldorf tradition. The kindergarten classes danced around their own smaller Maypoles. A seniors procession opened the larger event, in which each of our grades classes performed their own dance around the Maypole. As we went up the grades, the dances became more complex. A wonderful experience for our gradesโ and parentsโ audience! ๐บ๐ผ๐ธ
A little early this yearโjust trying to be mindful of the Texas heat!โthis festival has its roots in ancient May Day celebrations. The Maypole symbolizes the growth of spring vegetation and the tree of life. ๐ฟ
And for the first time, we had a Maypole Queen and King! Among the seniors, they were picked by our own campus chickens the day before. The first to have a chicken coming to feed in their hand, became the chosen ones! ๐

Last Saturday was a celebration. Our annual fundraiser and gala The Storied Trail was everything we could have hoped for and more. ๐ฅณ
While we honored the journey of our school so far, our eyes were firmly set on the future. Everyone who participated through their generosity helped light the way forward and contributed towards securing a Waldorf education for generations of students to come. โจ
We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, our donors, our development committee, and every single person who contributed to making this event such a success. ๐
Thank you. ๐
