Avoid harvesting juvenile growth for floral design use. This young smilax vine exhibited wilt 30 minutes after harvest in 85F heat, full sun. Mature smilax foliage, with a thicker cuticle, can take such conditions. This is the reason why smilax sales halt in the spring and producers steer sales toward other foliage, such as Elaeagnus.
