The object of the Fraternity shall be to encourage a spirit of Fraternity and love among its members; to stand at all times for character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty; to strive for and support the best interest of the colleges and universities in which chapters are installed, and in no way to disregard, injure, or sacrifice those interests for the sake of prestige or advancement of the Fraternity or any of its chapters. We are inspired and committed to our founding principles and are guided by the following values:

Our Founding:
Barnard College, in the late 1890’s, was the first separate college for women to be affiliated with a great men’s university such as Columbia University. AOII’s four Founders were in the class of 1898, young, and unlike most of the women who had entered Barnard in previous years. They were friendly, adventurous, frank and merry, and enthusiastically devoted to each other and to the class of ‘98. Determined to make a democratic, unostentatious society, the four women, Stella George Stern, Helen St. Clair, Elizabeth Heywood, and Jessie Wallace climbed a little winding stair into the stackroom of the old Columbia Library. This little room was rarely used and stored Anglo-Saxon tomes and ancient vellum manuscripts. While the four sat in a deep window seat, pigeons outside and snow lightly falling, they pledged one another at the beginning of the year 1897. Barnard College welcomed the new fraternity and it was not long before the first chapter, Alpha, was flourishing. The fraternity became national with the installation of Pi Chapter at Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, New Orleans, on September 8, 1898. Over the next 100 years, AOII has added to the ranks 180 collegiate chapters and initiated over 141,000 members. AOII has thrived and continued to grow throughout the changing 20th century. Despite several wars, the Great Depression, the women’s suffrage movement and the social unrest of the 1960’s, AOII has continued to hold true to its ideals. Founder Stella Perry once wrote, “that which makes our bond is promise certain of success. For our purpose cannot fail.”

Happy with Gracie and Audrey!!! This PC ‘25 started as roomies, to sisters, and then best friends!!! 🤗

Gracie:
Audrey and I met almost 2 years ago when we were both looking for roommates. Back then, I had no idea I had just met my best friend ever. From going through recruitment together to running home to AOII as sisters, there is no one I’d rather call my best friend! Now, I can’t imagine my life without Audrey. I am so thankful for AOII for bringing me my best friend and for showing me what a true sister is!

Audrey:
I met Gracie on Instagram my senior year and had no idea that one text would give me my best friend and sister! Gracie is a friend who is steadfast, loving, and kind. I couldn’t imagine college without her, and running home together to AOII was the cherry on top. Our friendship is so precious to me and I’ll always be thankful for our sisterhood!

Today we are SO excited to highlight our Sadie and her study abroad experience in London!!! 🇬🇧☕️❤️

My name is Sadie Thornton and I had the opportunity to study abroad in London this May, and it was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! I chose to go because I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and experience a new culture, and London was the perfect place to do that. My favorite part was getting to explore the city every day! There was always something new to see or do! I’ll never forget the memories and friends I made while studying abroad there!!

Spending holiday weekends together has become such a special way Anne Kathryn, Gracie, Ella Kate, and Hayden have the opportunity to stay connected over the summer! Moments like these remind us just how special sharing a sisterhood with our best friends truly is. You are one of the most genuine and kind-hearted people I know! From coffee dates to running in the pouring rain and getting completely soaked - doing it with you has been an absolute joy. Your love for others inspires me every day, and I thank God that he has blessed my life with you!
