Big things are happening in Birmingham. Lawson State is part of the partnership behind the new Junior Achievement McWane Economic Education Center—giving students hands-on experience with careers and budgeting.

It makes a difference later in life when the foundation for success is set early, right? We believe early exposure matters. Lawson State Community College is all about helping students create a vision for what's possible!

Lawson State was privileged to support the Rickney B. Hunter Miles for Minds 3K “Running for Healing & Hope” this weekend at DeBardeleben Park in Bessemer. The event, dedicated to raising awareness for men’s mental health while honoring the life and legacy of Rickney B. Hunter, drew folks of all ages and life stages to rally around men’s mental health and wellness.

Lawson State student leaders from Phi Theta Kappa and the college’s Ambassadors program cheered on runners and walkers, encouraging them every step of the route. They were joined by President Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony, Student Engagement Manager Tenesha Burns, and several Lawson State alumni and local supporters.

As dozens of blue balloons were released into the sky, Rickney’s sister Courtney reminded us all that “Every day you have a chance and a choice. Keep going.”

It's hard to believe a week has flown by since we gathered at Taco Mama in Homewood to have fun and raise funds. It was preceded by thunderstorms and lots of cautionary weather alerts, but the sun came out and so did the supporters of Lawson State Community College and Lawson State Community College Foundation.

THANK YOU!

So what does it look like when Lawson State Community College students take care of business?

Just ask Jasmyne Hill, one of the nation's newest recipients of a major scholarship from Kappa Beta Delta business honor society.

The aspiring entrepreneur recently earned the Dr. Andrew V. Stevenson International Merit Scholarship🏆, which will support her as she continues her studies and works toward her goals.

An excerpt from her winning essay offers a glimpse into her motivation:

“I run a hair braiding business, which has taught me entrepreneurship, financial responsibility, and customer service," Jasmyne wrote. "Mentoring others inspired my goal to empower people through education. My goal is to earn a business degree and open a salon and beauty school. This scholarship will help me continue turning challenges into purpose.”

Jasmyne, who maintains a 3.65 GPA, also serves as vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at Lawson. It’s no surprise she has a clear vision for what she wants to achieve.

“My personal and academic goals are driven by both my passion for education and my desire to create opportunities for others,” she added in her scholarship application.

Congratulations, Jasmyne! And thank you 😀 to Dr. Stephanie Henry of Lawson's Business and Information Technologies Division, for sharing the good news.
