What’s changing isn’t just the tools. It’s the ability to choose the right approach for each patient.

For 10 years, UAB Dentistry students and residents have partnered with schools, clinics, and community organizations across Alabama through the Alabama Schweitzer Fellowship program.

Since joining Alabama’s inaugural cohort in 2016, 19 UAB dental fellows have led projects focused on oral health community education, prevention, nutrition, advocacy, and access to care.

This year, three additional UAB dental students were selected for the current fellowship cohort.

For Hannah Thomas, patient care starts with trust.

As Hannah prepares to graduate from the UAB School of Dentistry, she reflects on what matters most in the chair. Many of her patients arrive feeling anxious or unsure. Over time, through conversation and compassion, they begin to feel at ease.

One patient told her she could eat steak again after treatment. Moments like that stay with Hannah. They are a reminder that dentistry can change how people live, not just how they feel in the moment.

She says one of the most important lessons she’s learned is to listen closely and help patients feel seen. That connection builds confidence on both sides and shapes every part of the care experience.

At UAB Dentistry, today’s students are helping inspire tomorrow’s dental professionals.

Through mentorship and engagement with the UAB Pre-Dental Society, current students share advice, encouragement, and firsthand perspective with students exploring careers in dentistry.
