🪓 Intermediate Blacksmithing: Forging Axes

Ready for an extreme transformation at the forge? In this intermediate blacksmithing class, students will take old hammers made from tool steel and transform the striking surface into an axe.
This class is designed for students ready to build on their blacksmithing skills and learn a more involved forging process from start to finish.
Along the way, you’ll:
🔹 Transform one metal object into another
🔹 Use drifting dies to widen the eye for proper axe handle fitting
🔹 Shape and refine the blade using the grinder
🔹 Sand, polish, and prepare the blade for finishing
🔹 Learn heat treatment through normalization, oil quenching, and heat tempering

Nothing beats that “I made this with my own two hands” feeling—especially when it comes out this good. 🙌 Our member Christian took our Beginner Wall Hook class with our new blacksmithing instructor and left with a forged hook featuring a clean twist, smooth curve, and a punched mounting hole—classic blacksmithing fundamentals in one finished piece.

This session features the Mesa Pen — an elegant one-piece twist pen with a refined design and a lower band detailed with inlaid black diamond shapes. It’s a classic look that feels intricate without being over the top.

New to woodworking? This class is the perfect place to start. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll design and build your own cutting board using a variety of native hardwoods, then learn the core skills that take it from rough pieces to a finished, gift-worthy board.

🔹 Use the thickness planer and orbital sander
