Paying homage to our elders allows us seeking our ancestors’ wisdom, guidance and
assistance for us. We honour by remembering. Remembering also opens up a communication channel with our personal history which shapes so much of our conscious and unconscious identity.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.

Memorial Day..
Medgar Evers survived WWII, only to be murdered fighting for democracy and human rights when he returned to the U.S. Evers fought for voting rights and investigated/exposed the murders of African Americans such as Emmett Till, Clinton Melton, and many more. To honor his memory and sustain his legacy, teach about Evers and the many other war veterans who were killed when they returned, most often for trying to vote!
