It is summer and we are binge watching all the good stuff. And, but good stuff I mean Dr. Ravinder Dahiya, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University becoming an actual tv star in real time.
Dr. Dahiya has been featured on not one but two different news stations about his work in the future of humanoid robots.

Student Spotlight 🔦
Juliana Castro, E’26, industrial engineering, completed three co-ops during her time at Northeastern. With a background in engineering and passion for making complex systems more accessible, she hopes to one day launch her own venture—built on the experience, perspective, and drive she developed along the way.
Castro completed three co-ops during her time at Northeastern. Her first was at Bain Capital, a global private investment firm. Her second co-op brought her to Rise Point, an edtech company in the midst of acquiring another firm. As an operations strategy co-op, Castro played a meaningful role in the rebranding and broader restructuring that came with that growth—work that put her alongside C-suite executives early in her career. Her final co-op was at Stax, a market research and consulting firm based in New York City that specializes in commercial due diligence and value creation for private equity firms.
Looking back on her time at Northeastern, the biggest piece of advice Castro has for current students is to “trust the process.” She experienced this firsthand during her second co-op search, when a fast-moving job market left her feeling behind. She kept applying and stayed open to where things might lead—and near the end of the application period, a new position appeared that she applied for and landed. That role turned out to be one of the most pivotal experiences of her college career, deepening both her professional network and her sense of direction.
Castro has also been awarded a Fulbright scholarship, through which she will pursue a master’s in digital business and Innovation at IE University in Madrid beginning in September 2026.

Student Spotlight 🔦
Aidan Kane, E’26, graduated this spring with a bachelors degree in chemical engineering. During his time at Northeastern, he gained extensive co-op experience and served as Project Lead for an initiative at the Sherman Center.
Kane completed three co-ops during his time at Northeastern. His first was at Pfizer as a bioprocess research and development co-op, working with process development teams. His second co-op brought him to Sage, a medical engineering consulting firm, where he worked as a product development engineer alongside multiple startups on their medical devices. Finally, he worked at WHOOP as a mechanical engineering co-op, contributing to hardware design for Bluetooth systems in next generation products.
Now that Kane has graduated, he reflects on a few lessons he wishes more students would take to heart. First and foremost, he encourages students to make the most of what Northeastern has to offer—in his words, failing to do so is “a disservice to yourself.” That spirit extends to studying abroad: Kane went abroad three times during his studies, and considers those experiences some of the most valuable of his time at Northeastern. He also urges students to treat co-ops as more than just jobs, describing them as steppingstones to a professional career that deserve genuine investment. Finally, Kane encourages students to build real relationships with their professors—not just for mentorship, but as a space to exchange ideas and perspectives. Those connections, he finds, tends to be the ones that last.

In this faculty spotlight, Yiannis Levendis—COE Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Center Member at The Plastics Center—shares his pioneering work in clean combustion, sustainable fuels, and environmental protection.
With decades of impact-driven research, Professor Levendis focuses on solving critical environmental challenges: air pollution, water contamination, wildfire ignition, and emissions from energy systems.
His groundbreaking work includes the development of iron as a recyclable, zero-greenhouse-gas fuel, demonstrating how pulverized iron can burn cleanly in power plants and be regenerated using hydrogen for repeated use. From designing ceramic-based reusable oil filters that reduce landfill waste to advancing concentrated solar power and technologies that harden homes against wildfires, his innovations tackle pollution at its source while enabling safe, sustainable energy production.
Supported by Northeastern’s Center for Research Innovation (CRI), Professor Levendis continues to expand collaborations across combustion science, materials engineering, wildfire mitigation, and renewable energy—creating opportunities for students, researchers, and industry to shape a cleaner future.
The team is seeking collaborations with:
• Researchers in clean combustion, materials science, and sustainable fuels
• Energy companies, utilities, and environmental engineering firms
• Organizations focused on renewable energy, emissions reduction, and wildfire mitigation
• Students interested in combustion research, environmental sustainability, and applied engineering innovation

Triple Feature! It takes three- siblings that is.
Carly, E’18, Kevin, E’21, and Kayla Parlato, E’26, have all graduated from Northeastern with mechanical engineering degrees. Inspired by their engineering father, they were all drawn to the same discipline, yet carved their own paths using the opportunities and resources Northeastern provided.

Award Alert 🚨
Four Northeastern engineering students — Clare Chi, Hebat Elkacemi, Jimmy Cheung, and Mia Filardi—were selected this year as Patrick P. Lee Scholarship recipients, chosen not for accolades alone but for their commitment to bringing others along with them. From teaching robotics to Boston schoolchildren to leading civic engagement programs and organizing voter registration drives, each has found a distinct way to turn their education outward. Their stories reflect a simple but demanding idea: that what you receive, you owe to others.
The Distinguished Lee Scholar Award is given to an exceptional Lee Scholar who has successfully integrated the Foundation's values of integrity, leadership and service into their personal and academic endeavors. The Distinguished Lee Scholar is a leader in and out of the classroom, helps foster the community of Lee Scholars, and finds meaningful ways to give back to others. To be eligible for the honor, a student must be a current Lee Scholar entering his/her final year of post-secondary study.
