In Gestalt, resistance isn’t something to overpower.
Instead, the Cape Cod Model invites us to view resistance by engaging with it. It may show us where someone is protecting themselves, where support is needed, where there's a lack of understanding, or where something important needs to be expressed.
Rather than labeling a person as “resistant,” Gestalt invites resistance by encouraging curiosity: "I'm glad you told me. Can you tell me more about that?" What is the client saying yes or no to? What support might be needed for something new to emerge?
That shift can build trust and shift the tone when moving toward something new. Resistance becomes not a problem to fix but more of a process to welcome and understand.
When practitioners meet resistance with curiosity and respect, they can help clients become more aware of what matters and where new choices may become possible.
How might your work change if you paused to engage resistance with curiosity?

Today, GISC honors Juneteenth, a day of remembrance, reflection, and continued commitment.
Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States and invites us to recognize both the history of delayed freedom and the ongoing work required to create more just, equitable, and inclusive communities.
As a learning community grounded in awareness, relationship, and meaningful contact, we believe this day calls us to pause, listen, and reflect on how we show up for one another — in our workplaces, our communities, and our shared systems.
May Juneteenth be a reminder that freedom is not only a historical milestone, but an ongoing responsibility.

Presence is more than just being in the room.
In Gestalt practice, presence includes the way we show up, how we listen, what we communicate through our tone and body, and the impact we have on others.
The Cape Cod Model reminds us that we are always influencing the space around us. Whether we’re speaking, staying silent, asking a question, offering support or an observation, we are contributing to what’s happening in the relationship.
For clinicians and other practitioners, presence is an important instrument of connection and change. Staying grounded, curious, and engaged may help create the conditions for a client to feel seen, supported, and able to explore something new.
As Gestalt practitioners we might ask ourselves: How am I showing up, and what impact am I having? How can I be more intentional and flexible in my own presence and ways of being with my client?
What does presence mean to you and what are you doing to develop it?

What does Gestalt really mean by “awareness”?
Awareness begins with noticing what you think or feel. It involves noticing your patterns, your choices, your assumptions, and your impact on others more intentionally.
In the Cape Cod Model, helping clients build awareness creates the possibility for change. When we can help clients notice what they’re doing in the moment, how they’re connecting, or what’s happening between themselves and others, they have more freedom to choose how to respond.
Gestalt practice reminds us that change often begins not by forcing something new, but by becoming more fully aware of what is already happening.
Where do you see awareness creating room for change in your own work or relationships?

If you’re thinking about The Humility Project, it’s natural to wonder what the experience will offer.
This monthly facilitated study group is designed to support more than learning new information. It offers space to build awareness, language, and confidence for staying present in conversations about racism and white privilege — especially when those conversations feel challenging or uncomfortable.
Over time, participants are invited to:
🔹Deepen their understanding of how systemic racism operates
🔹 Reflect on personal experiences, assumptions, and choices
🔹 Learn how to notice and work with discomfort rather than move away from it
🔹Strengthen their capacity to respond with greater intention and awareness
🔹 Take part in a study-group structure that can continue beyond the program
The intention isn’t to “get it right,” but to grow your ability to engage with honesty, care, and consistency — in your personal life, your professional work, and your community.
