Language learning doesn’t have to pause when summer starts.
Small, everyday moments can help students stay connected to the language they’re learning — whether they’re changing an app setting, listening to a song, watching a show with subtitles, or asking someone at home about a word or phrase they grew up hearing.
Here are 5 simple ways to keep language alive this summer.
Which one would your students actually try first?

The Raíces Essay Contest has been extended! 🎉
Students now have until August 15th to submit their essays for Raíces: Celebrating Hispanic Roots in the United States.
This contest is all about celebrating authentic stories — the voices, journeys, families, communities, and cultural roots that make Hispanic heritage so powerful and personal.
Teachers, this is a perfect opportunity to remind students over the summer: their story matters, and there’s still time to share it.
The first prize winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Spain for themselves, the guiding teacher, and a companion for each during the summer of 2027. In addition, 15 finalists will be invited to an award ceremony this coming October and all participants receive a free copy of Guillermo Fesser’s book, “Conoce a Bernardo de Galvez”.

This Immigrant Heritage Month, we honor the languages, stories, and traditions that shape who we are. Language is more than words—it carries memory, identity, and connection across generations. Learning languages helps us listen more deeply to one another and to the many voices in our communities.

While grades matter, they don’t always tell the full story of language learning.
Real growth can also look like a student initiating a conversation, taking a risk with new vocabulary, making meaning from authentic materials, or showing curiosity about another culture.
In the language classroom, progress is more than a percentage. It’s confidence, communication, cultural understanding, and the willingness to keep going.

Beyond Grades: Measuring Real Growth in the Language Class
With language, growth has to do with how students communicate, how they feel about using the language, and how they connect with cultures.
