Can freestyle rap become a powerful tool in modern mental health treatment?
Bowie State graduate students Yohannes Girma and Caleb Floyd are advancing research that explores how hip-hop culture, particularly freestyle rap, can support emotional expression, self-reflection and therapeutic engagement.
Their work contributes to a growing conversation around culturally responsive mental health care and the importance of meeting communities where they are.

Bowie State was founded in 1865, the same year freedom became official for so many.
More than 160 years later, as Maryland's first HBCU, we continue to carry forward a legacy rooted in resilience, opportunity and bold leadership.
This Juneteenth, we honor those who came before us, celebrate how far we've come and recommit ourselves to building a brighter future through education.
In observance of the holiday, the university is closed today.

What do bananas, biotechnology and Bowie State have in common? Innovation.
This summer, students and researchers in Bowie State's Department of Natural Sciences are working to establish one of the few banana and plantain germplasm repositories in the United States.
Through plant tissue culture, the team is preserving valuable genetic resources, producing disease-free plants and developing crop varieties that are more resilient to environmental stresses, pests and diseases.
The result is research that supports sustainable agriculture, strengthens food security and creates lasting impact far beyond our campus.
This is in action.
