His structural engineering experience includes projects using structural steel, concrete, masonry, timber, and pre-engineered lumber. Opening, operating, and maintaining my own structural engineering company has taught me the business side of engineering. You know, I’ve joked for years that as a structural engineer, I just punch numbers into a calculator and call it a day!
But with AI now able to run calculations faster (and sometimes better) than we can… it does make me wonder, where does that leave us?
Is engineering just math? Or is it the judgment behind the math?
Because the real value of a licensed professional isn’t just solving equations, it’s knowing which equations matter, when assumptions break down, how materials behave in the real world, and when something “looks right” on paper but feels off in practice.
There’s also the responsibility side: stamping a design means standing behind it with your name, your experience, and your accountability.
AI can learn patterns. It can even mimic decision-making. But can it truly replicate the intuition built from years of field experience, mistakes, and lessons learned?
