Having to share your child with their other parent - especially for the first holiday after the separation or divorce - can bring feelings of loneliness that make it hard to believe there’ll be other Christmases and birthdays where they’ll most likely be with you.* Sharing with the children just how much we’ll miss them can be a teachable moment demonstrating a healthy expression of adult emotions, as well as teach older kids about compassion and how to empathize with others. However, it’s important to mind our mood so as not to communicate a sense of hopelessness (I’ll miss you so much that I don’t know what to do) or helplessness (Whose gonna help me with the Christmas decorations, when you’re gone?). Beyond the holiday season, your kids need to know that they’ll be ok because you’ll be ok.

Some parents use the holidays as an opportunity to “one up” their coparent by giving the child too many gifts (for their age) or the lavish type of gifts that may be too costly for the child’s other parent to afford. Then there’s the parent who uses expensive gifts – for the sole purpose of wooing their child’s affection away from their other parent.* The simple truth is that – for our kids - quality time can be so much more valuable than the latest electronic. And, an enjoyable game night with family and friends offers the type of experiences that stay with the child long after the batteries in their latest gadget have died. As young adults, my kids still talk about our holiday marathon Monopoly gamenights and the experience of donating one of their gifts to a shelter for kids who might otherwise go without. So, decide to fill your child’s Christmas stocking with happy holiday memories. It’s these gifts that create a season comfort and joy that will last a lifetime.
