Nursery rhymes are more than just sweet little songs we pass downâthey are one of the earliest and most powerful ways children learn language.
Through repetition, rhythm, and rhyme, children naturally begin to hear the patterns in words. They build phonological awareness, grow their vocabulary, and strengthen the skills theyâll later use for reading and writing.
These moments donât have to be formal or structured. A rhyme shared during bedtime, in the car, or while waiting in line can become a tiny literacy lesson wrapped in connection.
Try pausing before the rhyming word and inviting your child to say it with you. Those small invitations build confidence and joy around language.
Looking for an easy early literacy activity you can do during storytime? đ
One of the simplest ways to build phonological awareness and early reading skills is by helping your child listen for rhyming words while you read.
As youâre reading a book, pause before a rhyming word and let your child fill in the blank:
âThe cat sat on the ___.â
This simple literacy activity helps children:⨠Develop phonological awareness⨠Recognize rhyming words⨠Strengthen listening skills⨠Build vocabulary⨠Support kindergarten readiness and future reading success
The best part? You donât need any special materialsâjust a favorite book and a few extra pauses during storytime.
Small moments like these can have a big impact on your childâs reading readiness.

If youâre looking for a fun way to build phonological awareness, strengthen early literacy skills, and support kindergarten readiness, this book is a great choice.
The hilarious illustrations bring everyday compound words to life in unexpected ways, keeping children engaged and laughing from beginning to end. While theyâre enjoying the humor, theyâre also learning an important reading skillârecognizing that larger words can be broken into two smaller words.
I especially love that the two words within each compound word are printed in different colors, helping children visually see how words are formed. This simple feature supports word awareness, vocabulary development, and future decoding skills.
Books like this show that learning to read doesnât have to feel like work. Through playful read-alouds and meaningful conversations, children build the strong literacy foundation they need to become confident readers.
Whatâs your favorite book for teaching compound words?
Today was one of those days I wish I could bottle up and keep forever.
My first official book signing and storytime at Barnes & Noble was everything I hoped it would be and more.
The biggest highlight wasnât signing copies of my bookâit was meeting all of the wonderful families and sweet children who came to share in Ollieâs story. Seeing little faces light up during storytime, hearing children talk about being brave, and connecting with families who stopped by made this day incredibly special.
A heartfelt thank you to Michael and Susan at Barnes & Noble for your kindness, encouragement, and support throughout the day. You made me feel so welcomed and helped make this experience one Iâll never forget.
To everyone who came, listened, shared a smile, purchased a book, or simply stopped by to say helloâthank you. Your support means more than I can put into words.
Today was about so much more than a book. It was about connection, community, and sharing a story that I hope helps children believe in themselves just a little more.
My heart is full.
Compound words are more than just a fun word gameâthey help children develop important phonological awareness skills that support future reading success.
Using picture cards allows
children to SEE and HEAR how two smaller words can be combined to create a new word. As children practice breaking compound words apart and putting them back together, they are strengthening the foundational skills needed for decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension.
The best part? This simple, hands-on activity turns learning into play while engaging multiple senses to help concepts stick.

If youâre looking for childrenâs books that support early literacy skills, The Art of Words is one of my favorites.
This beautifully illustrated book encourages children to explore language in a playful and meaningful way. Through creative typography and engaging visuals, children see words stretched, enlarged, transformed, and brought to life. It helps them understand that words are something to notice, discuss, and enjoy.
As a literacy specialist, I love how this book supports:
⨠Word awareness
⨠Vocabulary development
⨠Oral language skills
⨠Reading readiness
⨠Preschool literacy development
While reading, try asking:
đ What do you notice about this word?
đ How does this word make you feel?
đ Can you think of another word with a similar meaning?
đ Why do you think the illustrator made it look this way?
These simple conversations help children build a deeper understanding of language while fostering a love of words.
Before children learn to read independently, they need opportunities to hear, explore, and play with language. Books like The Art of Words help lay that foundation while making learning fun.

Literacy doesnât begin when children start reading booksâit begins in the everyday conversations, stories, and language experiences at home. When parents talk, play, and interact with intention, children are building the foundation for future reading success.
Simple moments like describing what youâre doing, asking open-ended questions, singing songs, and retelling events all strengthen early literacy skills such as vocabulary development, oral language, and phonological awareness.
You are your childâs first and most important teacherâand literacy starts with you.
