Happy Memorial Day, what a opportunity to appreciate those who have given their lives for our freedoms. The beginning of this day was memorialized by these events....
memorial day beginnings Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was established to honor fallen soldiers following the American Civil War. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, by proclamation of General John A. Logan, who led an organization of Union veterans.The holiday's roots and evolution include several key milestones:
May 1, 1865: One of the earliest documented ceremonies was held in Charleston, South Carolina, by formerly enslaved Black Americans honoring Union soldiers buried in a mass grave.May 5, 1868: General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic officially established "Decoration Day" for the nation to decorate war graves with flowers. May 30 was likely chosen because spring flowers were in bloom across the country.1866 (Waterloo, NY): The village of Waterloo, New York, is often credited with hosting the first formal, community-wide celebration on May 5, 1866, and was officially recognized as the birthplace of the holiday by Congress and President Lyndon B. It's been a while....how is everyone? I hope you are enjoying the weather where evver you are living or vacationing.
So much going on in our world however I choose to see the events we are experiencing as a time in life to make more clear decisions on how you are living life. Are you expressing gratitude, forgiveness and leaning into hopefulness.... Be careful not to get over absorbed in the negative distractions, or get comfortable in those "not so bad" decisions we can become way to familiar with..... a just for the sake of it I suggest be mindful of those behaviors that could easily separate us from friends and loved ones. I want to share this scripture: New International Version
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8 Enjoy your season...
