I had planning WRONG!
The classroom planning mistake I made for over 10 years.
I planned lessons.
I planned activities.
I planned themes.
But I wasn’t planning what students would actually experience every day.
👇 What’s one thing you want students to experience every day in your classroom?
For years, I thought stronger teaching meant working harder.
Then a coach challenged my thinking:
We say we want leadership, ownership, and independence—but are we creating opportunities for students to practice them?
Students don’t become those things by accident. We have to intentionally teach them.

What are your plans for this summer?
Most teachers spend June collecting ideas.
The teachers who have the easiest years spend a little time building a plan.
Not lesson plans.
A plan for the classroom experience they want to create.
How students will work together.
How ownership will look.
What expectations will be reinforced.
What kind of culture they’ll intentionally build.
Because classroom culture doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s built one decision at a time.
I’ve learned after 20+ years in education that when culture improves, almost everything gets easier.

For years, I thought August was the time to get ready for school.

By August, I was stressed, overwhelmed, and trying to fix things I should have planned months earlier.

One thing I’ve learned over the years:
You don’t have to choose between building something meaningful and enjoying your life.
Early dinner out.
A cocktail on the patio.
Dogs running around.
Dave enjoying a cigar.
And me? Finishing up Week 4 of our summer series because I’m genuinely excited about it.
A little work.
A little relaxation.
A lot of appreciation.
Life is good.
