Please join me in welcoming Claire Houlihan to the Total Writing Enrichment team this summer!

Claire's journey with TWE comes full circle. As a former TWE student, she experienced the college admissions process firsthand and understands the power of finding and sharing your authentic voice.

Today, Claire is a student at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, and we're excited to have her supporting our communications and marketing efforts this summer.

As a test-optional applicant, Claire successfully navigated the admissions process without submitting standardized test scores, relying instead on the strength of her application and essays.

We're thrilled to have her on the team and look forward to introducing you to more of Claire's work in the months ahead.

Welcome, Claire!

“Working with Amy and her team is one of the best things I did for my son during the college application process.”
-Betsy Harootyan, New Trier High School parent 💙💚🩶

Helping students learn the writing skills needed to complete authentic, exceptional college essays not only helps them get accepted, but allows them to feel confident, supported, and prepared throughout the college essay process.

I especially love the independence and confidence this student gained along the way — from scheduling tutoring sessions to completing applications and hitting submit himself.… and the peace of mind for his parents!

Thank you for trusting Total Writing Enrichment to be part of such an important season. 😊

When is the last time you have studied good writing?! ✍️

The students whose college essays stop an admissions officer mid-read all have one thing in common.

They rewrote.

They rewrote again.

They kept an open mind and accepted the work they had to put in to create college essays that pulled out the best of their personality.

I spent part of my Memorial Day 🇺🇸 weekend reading an informative book on writing.

55 strategies for writing filled my mind and I loved every chapter as I pictured the potential of my upcoming students’ college essays.

Even after 23 years of teaching writing, I still go back to the fundamentals:
✔️Verbs.
✔️Specificity.
✔️Remove clutter…hint: unnecessary adverbs.

When students know how to write with accurate words to express their authentic voice they will create standout college essays.

Admissions officers already have the transcript, the résumé, the activity list.

What stops them mid-read, what makes them remember a student is voice. And that voice doesn’t come from the first draft.
✒️That special, unique voice comes from knowing what memorable writing actually looks like.

And then going back in until you’ve found yours by being willing to write again. 😊

Had a great time at Gaston Christian School talking about college essay writing.

These are the 3 takeaways I always come back to:

• Real stories matter more than “perfect” topics
• Specific details make the difference
• Your voice matters more than what you think colleges want to hear

❤️ Some of my earliest memories of my dad involve him writing goals.

I observed his quiet thoughtfulness as he mapped out football plays for his team, home improvement ideas for our family, and track splits for my 1600 meter race. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

From school grades to athletic performance, my dad believed in having a direction and taking the time to write a specific plan.

And then to picture yourself that vision.

I recently lost my dad and I’ve been reflecting on what made him such a caring father and strong leader.

He took the time to get clear and then move forward with intention.

He sought out help and guidance when a project was beyond his skills.

It’s something I think about a lot, especially this time of year with students.

Summer is one of the best opportunities students have to pause, reflect, and build the skills they’ll need for the next school year ahead without the pressure of homework, projects and exams.

For rising 8th, 9th, and 10th and 11th graders, that means:

✔️ writing an engaging attention grabber
✔️ learning how to express ideas clearly
✔️ writing a specific arguable thesis

If you want to master these skills and step into the next school year strong, I have a few spots open for summer writing camp students.

Now is a great time to start mapping out goals, creating a plan, and taking inspired action.
