No better way to end the school year than a trip to Carowinds! These students have worked so hard this year, I think they deserve a little fun time. Thank you to the chaperones for making this trip a breeze. We had a blast!

Congratulations to the entire SMS Band program for a fantastic Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 5th. The students did an excellent job of showcasing all the hard work they have done over the course of the semester. We would like to thank the Emanuel County BOE, SMS administrators, faculty, staff, parents and community for your continued support!

The 8th grade band did a fantastic job performing for 5th graders at SES today! They demonstrated characteristic sounds of the various instruments while highlighting how FUN it is to be in band. I am proud of their hard work and we are very excited to welcome the next class of students to the SMS Band Program in the fall! Thank you Swainsboro Elementary School for having us!

Congratulations to the SMS Band for an OUTSTANDING performance last Thursday. Band members had the amazing opportunity to perform the National Anthem for pregame before a Savannah Ghost Pirates ice hockey game! They worked extremely hard and they sounded great!

SWAINSBORO is a wonderful play to be. Even dealing with a disaster and widespread damage to the area, people come together to help each other. We all have seen the obvious utility workes, community volunteers, cleaning, the list goes on and on. I have never worked in a place where you can have such extensive damage to school buildings and the next day have the county office personnel be so accommodating and easy to work with to come up with solutions. (Big shoutout to Jansen Ware and Denise Warnock). They are fantastic and on top a horrible situation. Then I make 2 phone calls and have a dozen band kids and several sets of parents show up to the bandroom in less than an hour to help go through and sort and inventory assess the damage. Folks, we live in a fantastic community!

Love it when former students come by for a visit. Terry Andrews is now a doctoral student studying flute performance in Kansas. He recently return from performing in Puerto Rico, has won the association of negro musicians national scholarship competition, and has been awarded a paid fellowship to perform with the Air Force Band in Washington DC! SUch a great pleasure to catch up with the fantastic musician (and person!)

Merry Christmas Everyone! It has truly been an unusual year! From school being cancelled last year, to the possibilty of no band this year, to band without recruiting and socially distanced, it has been a whirlwind, but the students (and parents) have been fantastic. Although band has been quite different in class and we have not gotten to do many of our usual activities, the students have been learning and growing musically and I am so very proud of their accomplishments. We were able to compete in one virutaly event and I am proud to say that once again the Junior Beta Jazz Band has placed 1st in group talent competition and will represent SMS in the national competition this summer (covid permitting). This is is the 4th time that the Beta Jazz Band has represented SMS in the national competition.

Because we could not have a live Winter Concert, I did want to share with parents and family some of the things the SMS band has been working on this year. This is just a sampling and nowhere near a polished performance that we are used to giving, however the students do want to show off their hard work. The video represents the first time the students have played together for each grade (each grade is split into 2 or 3 different classes to keep numbers down.) And is the first time the students have ever heard the other instruments. To keep contact and time together down, we had no combined rehearsals, simply got together and recorded our best effort each day with a different grade spread out in the lunchroom. And if you have every tried to get 60+ 6th grade students to do anything at the same time, then you understand the challenges.

I am very proud of the students and hope that you can hear the progression as the students move from 6th to 7th and 8th grade. They are an absolute joy to teach. Wishing you and your family the most wonderful of holiday seasons,,.,,,,,Dr. Hundley
