At just 17 years old, Ryan Garner from North Carolina soared into history as the youngest African American to earn a private pilot’s license in the state, breaking into a field where only about 3.4% of pilots are Black. His journey didn’t start in the cockpit—it began on the ground, working as part of the airport’s crew until a conversation with a Delta pilot helped him set his sights skyward.

Garner’s story isn’t just about talent; it’s about mentorship, representation, and opportunity. By following his dream and achieving such a milestone at a young age, he provides a visible example for other African American youth aspiring to enter aviation or any field where they’ve historically been underrepresented.

The accomplishment resonates because it shows that barriers can be broken when guidance meets ambition, and it sparks a broader conversation about the importance of opening doors for the next generation in careers that have long lacked diversity.

The Charles Herbert Flowers Foundation is proud to have supported the 2026 UNCC STEAM Expo, a highly successful event where community members of all ages gained insights into STEM careers and participated in various activities.

Good morning, beautiful people! Come out today to join the STEAM Expo on the campus of UNC Charlotte. The event is free and open to the public. They will have workshops for children of all ages as well as an opportunity to visit science labs and conduct simple experiments.
