More than 7,500 children rely on the District of Columbia’s childcare subsidy program, a vital support for parents attending work or school. Despite growing demand, D.C. is cutting the program due to budget constraints, leaving new applicants on a waitlist and limiting new childcare providers starting May 12.

Current recipients can maintain benefits if they remain eligible and recertify on time, but families like Yesmine Holmes, mother of five, and Akua Danqua, mother of three, worry about the impact. Danqua credited the subsidy with allowing her to finish college and buy a home at age 24.

Childcare costs in D.C. are high, ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 per month per child, putting financial strain on families without subsidies. The cuts come as demand for affordable childcare continues to grow, sparking concern among parents and advocates about access and child welfare.
