The children of celebrate this national holiday by learning about the history of Black Americans in Galveston, TX who were told they were free in 1865 after the Emancipation Proclamation being signed two years prior. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on June 17, 2021, officially making June 19 a federal holiday.

As our nation and world mourns the passing of the Legendary Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. we as educators must continue to pour into our children and communities as the Reverend would have. We must teach our children not only their ABCs and 123s, but teach them the love of themselves and all they are made of. Teach them to love their race, culture, appearances, differences, language, etc. And to accept that we are not all the same and that’s ok. We are uniquely us! Teach them that they can be anyone they want to be. There may be stumbles in their journey, but they deserve the opportunity to aspire and be great like everyone else.

As a child care program that serves predominately Black children we make sure the teachings of Black history is continuously throughout our lessons and everyday hands on activities. Staff is also learning new information about Black Americans as more and more accurate information is available. On this day of January 19, 2026 as we celebrate and observe the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we reflect on the times then and what we are experiencing today. Things are looking a little similar and that shouldn’t be the route this country and nation should be in and headed to. Let’s make this country a better place for not only us, but our children. Let’s teach them and lead them to a better and beautiful America.
