Join us at CREC on July 15th and learn about the benefits of compost and biochar can have for agriculture. Topics covered are soil health, recent research regarding soil amendments and HLB-affected citrus, and federal reimbursement programs available to growers who want to build more resilient soils. Registration is free and open to all commodities, not just citrus. Representatives from NRCS will be attending to answer questions regarding the 336 program (soil carbon amendments) and we will have local producers from Florida in attendance to answer any questions about sourcing materials for farms.

With the help of Darren McAvoy, assistant professor at @usuextension, we’re making biochar to improve our soil health and move toward a more sustainable way of farming. Biochar is charcoal made specifically for the soil and is created by burning organic waste in a low-oxygen environment. Darren built this kiln to do exactly that, at scale. That controlled burn locks carbon into a stable, porous material instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. When inoculated, those pores become a thriving home for beneficial microbes. It holds water and nutrients in the soil longer, reduces the need for inputs, and keeps carbon locked in the ground for centuries, making it one of the only truly carbon negative practices in agriculture. Biochar fixes Florida's lost fertilizer problem after every summer storm. Both cation and anion exchange capacity are increased substantially. 1% biochar in a mature soil boosts CEC 10 points and AEC 5 points. This holds expensive fertilizers in place until the plants are ready to use it. NO MORE SENDING YOUR COSTLY PLANT NUTRITION DOWN THE RIVER. 🐟🐟🐟

These are flame-cap style biochar kilns made locally from mild steel and are the easiest and quickest way to making a substantial quantity of biochar for your gardens. The kilns are heavy duty tools for the farm or homestead. The inverted pyramid kilns have a 5 to 1 conversion ratio so expect to burn 500 gallons of dry brushy wood waste to make 100 gallons of permanent biochar ($500-1000 value).
