The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized and conditionally approved drugs available for New World screwworm infestation and prevention. Farmers and ranchers are advised to contact their veterinarian to receive direction on the appropriate product for their animals.

USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed a case in a goat in Gillespie County, Texas. TAHC and USDA are working to learn more about the case, establish surveillance and testing, and spread awareness in the area.

On June 11, 2026, the seventh and eighth cases of NWS were confirmed- one in a Zavala County bovine and one in an Edwards County goat. Additional zones and changes to existing zones will be posted to the TAHC website and updated in the interactive map once they are officially established.

🚨 With the recent detection of New World screwworm in a 3-week-old bovine in Zavala County, TX, USDA urges residents to contact your veterinarian right away if you see any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations in your animals or herd.

If you see signs of maggot infestations in live or very recently dead wild animals, especially in areas near the U.S./Mexico border, please call 866-4USDA-WS (866-487-3297) to report it to your local USDA Wildlife Services office.
