In this clip, Lou discusses proper technique when executing a box squat. The box squat should be performed this way no matter if an individual is a raw powerlifter, a geared powerlifter, or an athlete.
The box allows us to break up the eccentric/concentric chain, achieving relaxed-overcome-by-dynamic work. This results in a greater level of force output.
Just touching the box or achieving static positioning renders the box useless. If the goal were to achieve static-overcome-by-dynamic work, we would execute a pause squat.
The box is a tool to achieve relaxed-overcome-by-dynamic work, not as a means of measuring squat depth.
Some argue that frequent box squatting results in a lowered level of sport-specific skill for the powerlifter.
Within the Conjugate Training System, we can execute the competition squat motor pattern during maximal effort training, or as a primary accessory exercise executed between 70-85% for an appropriate amount of sets and reps.
When executed properly, box squatting will rapidly improve lower body rate of force development, increasing lower body explosive power and overall athletic ability.

Coaches,
We’ve used everything from handwritten notebooks to Excel to Google Sheets.
is the first platform that actually supports the Conjugate system instead of slowing us down. Flexible enough for complex programming, simple enough that athletes just open it and train.
If you’re stitching together multiple apps to manage your team, it’s worth a look.
That’s why we moved our in-house and remote programming to Bridge.
In this clip, Lou coaches Mike Ruggiera and Chuck Vogelpohl through a dynamic effort lower workout.
