May is Asian American Pacific Islander History Month! As a part of this month's "Artist's Voices" series, we will be recognizing AAPI artists impacting the artworld!

AAPI Creators: Nam June Paik

The perfect follow up to celebrating 100 years of Route 66!

Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is widely regarded as the founder of video art and one of the most influential figures in 20th-century contemporary art. Born in Seoul, Korea, Paik studied music and aesthetics in Japan and Germany before moving to the United States, where he became a central figure in the avant-garde Fluxus movement.

Paik’s work revolutionized how artists use technology. At a time when television was primarily a one-way broadcast medium, he transformed it into a tool for artistic expression, experimentation, and critique. His early works involved manipulating TV sets, distorting images with magnets, altering circuits, and reimagining screens as sculptural objects.

Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii (1995), uses hundreds of televisions and neon lights to map the United States, anticipating today’s interconnected digital culture. Paik also coined the term “electronic superhighway” decades before the internet became widespread, demonstrating his forward-thinking vision. His work blends humor, philosophy, globalism, and media critique, often exploring the relationship between humans and rapidly evolving technology.
