Recently, Kadence Booze, Health Sciences Library (HSL) Public Services student assistant, traveled to Lima, Peru, for a Medlife Movement service learning trip that reshaped how she sees healthcare. 🌎🇵🇪
Kadence worked alongside healthcare professionals across three clinic days, supporting family medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and OB/GYN. She also helped lead hygiene education efforts to promote preventative care. On project day, she helped to build staircases for communities in mountainous areas with limited access to basic resources like running water.
“Seeing firsthand the challenges individuals face in accessing basic healthcare services deepened my appreciation for the privilege of caring for others,” Kadence reflected. "I gained a greater understanding of how healthcare is not just in a clinic but is heavily influenced by environmental, economic and social factors. Going to Lima, Peru, has inspired me to continue seeking opportunities that combine healthcare and service, and I hope to participate in more service learning trips in the future."
We’re grateful Kadence shared her story and look forward to the impact she’ll continue to make as a future physician. ❤️
