Good Morning from the flock! Simon wanted to share his wisdom with y'all: breakfast is the most important meal of the day 😅
In case you wonder, Krümel and Muffin are in the separated area right now. Simon is still very mean to Muffin, and this is to protect her from him. Usually, we had Simon inside the separated area, but a few days ago he tried to escape, jumped over the fence, but entangled himself. It was a miracle that he didn't hurt himself, but we don't want to take any chances right now. I guess he was tired of drake jail ...

Did you know ducks can suddenly panic over the strangest things?
Because ducks are prey animals, they are wired to react fast to anything that feels unusual or unsafe.
Sometimes it is a real threat like a hawk overhead…
…and sometimes? 😅
🎈 A loose balloon.
(True story. Our entire flock once panicked and ran straight into the pool because of one suspicious balloon.)
Sudden noises, shadows, unfamiliar objects, or even one nervous duck can send the whole flock into alert mode. Knowing what panic looks like can help you keep your ducks feeling safe and secure.
👀 Have your ducks ever panicked over something completely ridiculous? Tell me in the comments!

Summer Thermoregulation: Why Waterfowl Overheat
Waterfowl love summer splashing, but beneath the feathers lies an intricate and highly sensitive physiological balance. Because ducks are heavily insulated homeotherms with a baseline core body temperature of 106°F to 108°F, they lack cutaneous sweat glands and must deploy specialized biological adaptations to survive extreme ambient heat.
When temperatures soar, ducks rely heavily on behavioral adjustments and two primary physiological mechanisms: vasodilation (shunting warm blood to the highly vascularized networks in their unfeathered legs and feet to radiate heat) and evaporative cooling (panting and gular fluttering). However, if their microenvironment isn't engineered to support these processes, these systems can rapidly fail, leading to severe heat stress, respiratory alkalosis, and cellular dehydration.
Flock members like Emma and Schnatterinchen know this instinctively, choosing to compress their feathers and minimize metabolic exertion in the deep shade during peak hours. Meanwhile, high-production hens or recovering birds like Krümel require extra environmental interventions to keep their metabolic systems out of the danger zone.
Here is how to support your ducks:
✅ Maximize Vascular Heat Dumps: Provide deep, shaded water sources rather than shallow dishes. Shallow water turns into a heat trap; adding ice blocks to pools maintains the cold thermal gradient needed to draw heat away from their webbed feet.
✅ Prevent Respiratory Alkalosis: Move all nutritional resources and hydration stations into deep, permanent shade. Forcing ducks to walk across sun-baked ground to eat or drink increases kinetic metabolic heat and worsens dangerous panting.
✅ Eliminate Coop Thermal Traps: Ensure your nighttime housing is completely ventilated. Stagnation traps high humidity, preventing ducks from successfully utilizing evaporative cooling while they sleep.
✅ Support Hydration Mechanics: During intense heat waves, introduce chilled water infused with avian electrolytes to restore systemic balance lost through panting.
