One of the questions homeschool families get asked all the time is, “What do you do during the summer?”

The short answer? Whatever works for your family.

Some homeschoolers take a complete break. Some continue with light academics. Others spend the summer traveling, volunteering, exploring museums, reading great books, attending camps, learning life skills, or diving into passion projects.

One of the best things about homeschooling is that learning doesn’t have to stop just because it’s summer. Learning happens everywhere.

Now this is how you spend the first day of June.
We started the day at the library and ended our adventure at the National Videogame Museum.
A good day was had, filled with learning, exploring, and making memories.

Yesterday, we lost another child to wandering right here in North Texas. Eight-year-old MJ Ashmead.

My heart aches every single time this happens.

As Autism parents, caregivers, we know that wandering and elopement are not just statistics. These are children. These are families whose lives are forever changed.

That’s why I created my Autism Safety Kit not knowing that it would happened to my own son, Roman.

When Roman was in middle school, I received the call every Autism parent fears. He had wandered away from P.E class. Thankfully, staff found him quickly and brought him back safely. But I will never forget that feeling. My mind immediately went to the families who had received similar calls and did not have the same outcome.

I continued researching wandering and elopement, talking with families, and creating practical tools to help parents prepare. What started as a simple safety box has grown into a customized safety resource that includes tools, planning materials, and an IEP safety plan for families.

The need is too great to ignore.
