@naturejab_ Turning Plastic Into Fuel — Backyard Inventor’s Story Julian Brown is a young, self-taught inventor who could change the world — all from his backyard. Born in Tennessee and raised in Atlanta, Julian didn’t have a degree or access to fancy labs. Yet, with sheer determination and creativity, he found a way to turn plastic waste — yes, the plastic you throw in your trash — back into usable fuel like diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel. The idea came from a simple but powerful insight: plastics originally come from crude oil. So Julian asked himself, why not reverse the process? Using a small homemade reactor, he developed a process called “plastic or lead,” converting plastic waste into clean fuel. He launched a startup called Nitro Jam and shared his experiments on Instagram, quickly gaining viral attention on TikTok. While the science behind this process — pyrolysis — isn’t new, Julian upgraded it by using microwaves and solar energy to make the conversion cleaner and more efficient. Despite suffering serious injuries from an explosion during his experiments, he refused to give up on his vision. Julian tried raising $1 million to scale his idea but only managed to raise tens of thousands. In 2025, he went dark for a while amid attacks but has now returned. Experts skeptical of his work claim it’s risky or unproven, but independent testing confirms the fuels he produces are some of the purest and most refined out there, and they work in real engines. This invention has huge potential, especially for places like Africa, where plastic waste piles up in huge dumps. Converting that plastic into fuel could provide accessible energy and help solve pollution problems simultaneously. So why isn’t Julian Brown’s story everywhere? Why hasn’t the Black community and wider world supported this young genius with millions in funding?
