celebrating the celebrant is the priority 👌
my philosophy about gigging is that it isn't really about my dancing. it's about making the guest of honor feel as spotlighted as they're comfortable with and helping everyone in the room feel included.
i talk a lot while i'm performing, and i do a ton of audience participation because nobody wants to watch someone else have a 30-minute personal moment. 😬
imo, the job is to bring up and swirl the energy of the room. to make even the least likely person to dance feel comfortable engaging. that's why being a people person matters so much in this work.
of course being a good dancer is important, but what makes someone exceptional at this job is their ability to connect with people.

inspired by true events 😉
when someone asks me this before they even set foot in the classroom, i already know there’s a high chance they’ll come once and then never return again. that mindset is focused on instant gratification and some sort of finish line that doesn’t exist.
real talk, you are looking at 10 years of consistent attention to dance and i still feel like a baby dancer.
i speak to my experience in the post, but i think universally you have to hold the line through discomfort, stay humble and curious, and genuinely love the style itself if you want to stay for years.
most importantly, try not to be so hard on yourself. something i am personally very bad at lol. pure enjoyment is the whole point! 👌
