The diagnosis opens the door for solutions

We often look at students with IEPs and focus on what they can’t do.
But what if we shifted that lens?

Let’s also look at what they can do.

What strengths are already there?

What skills are within their control right now?

Think about their circle of control—the tasks, choices, and skills they can manage independently.

Are we teaching independence in ways that match their age and ability?
Are we building skills they can actually use in their everyday lives?
An IEP shouldn’t just close gaps—it should build confidence, capability, and independence.

What skills and strengths are you proud of that are already in your child today?

Parents- it is important to document your concerns, requests, verbal promises, and any other important things related to your child's IEP or 504. Then it is important to have an organizational system.
