💙 ARIEL BERRYMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLAR 💙
Please help us congratulate Katalina Lopez (DSST: Montview '26) — this year's recipient of the Ariel Berryman Memorial Scholarship, an honor that recognizes DSST graduates who embody resilience, leadership, and a commitment to giving back.
Katalina will be the first person in her family to graduate from high school. This fall, she heads to CU Denver to study health science on her way to becoming an occupational therapist — driven by a deep desire to serve children with disabilities, elderly patients, and accident survivors with the care and dignity they deserve.
Her path wasn't easy. But from the moment she walked into DSST: Montview, she found a community that believed in her — and she never looked back. She went on to lead SOMOS, Montview's Hispanic culture club, creating a space where every student could feel seen and celebrated.

🚲 What started as a substitute teaching role at DSST: Cedar turned into eight years of building meaningful relationships with students, growing as an educator, and creating a life rooted in community. Outside of the classroom, Colorado gave Brock Schardin space to pursue another passion too: cycling and co-owning Z Cycle Shop.
That’s one of the things we love about DSST Public Schools. Our staff show up deeply for students. And they’re encouraged to stay connected to the things that bring them joy outside of school.
A career with purpose.
A community that supports you.
A city full of adventure.
And room to build a life you genuinely love living.

DSST Spanish teacher and bike shop owner, Brock Schardin is thriving in Colorado When Brock first came to Colorado, he wasn’t looking for a perfectly mapped-out plan. He had spent six years living in Europe—teaching, studying, and doing graduate research. While he knew he was ready to come back to the United States, he also knew one thing for sure: moving back to a small tow...

Nyjah M., a recent grad from DSST: Conservatory Green High School, just won the Future Leaders Award!
He designed assistive technology to help people with blindness navigate the world. He started a Science Fair Club to mentor peers through the process. He's a member of the , a legacy of the original Tuskegee Airmen. And he's done all of this while managing a lupus diagnosis he received after a stroke his freshman year.
Next fall, he heads to to study electrical engineering and computer science, with a clear vision: social entrepreneurship driven by humanitarian impact.
Sudents who don't just learn the material, but use it to solve real problems for real people, is what DSST's mission looks like in practice.

In 2011, DSST: Cole opened its doors. Ben Garfield was in that first high school class — and he knew the weight of what his class was carrying.
Ben and his 74 classmates weren't just earning diplomas. They were writing a story.
Today, Ben works in communications at Colorado PERA and is completing his MBA at CU Boulder. He credits DSST's interdisciplinary approach for preparing him to thrive across academic formats — and its core values for getting him through the hard moments.
"I still look at the world through that lens, hoping to not just find success for myself but to ensure that those around me do too."

When 27 leaders from Washington state want to see what top-performing schools look like, they come to Colorado — and they come to DSST: Cedar Middle & High School💙
Last week, Colorado Senator James Coleman joined those leaders as they visited our middle school classrooms firsthand. What they saw stopped them in their tracks: Cedar students asking deep, thoughtful questions and driving their own learning.
This is what a 6–12 journey looks like from the very beginning. It starts here, in middle school, with curiosity, courage, and a community that believes every student has something powerful to say.
