Chest voice, head voice — the labels might actually be getting in your way.

Your voice is one connected instrument. The moment you start treating it like that, the transitions get easier, the tension drops, and things start to sound a whole lot better.

Your nervous system doesn’t know the difference between a thought and the truth. When you constantly say “my high notes are bad” or “I can’t do runs” — your body performs exactly that. 🎤

Positive self-talk isn’t toxic positivity. It’s literally how you train your instrument.

Save this if you need the reminder. đź”–

If it hurts to speak, hurts to swallow, or hurts to sing — cancel the gig. 🛑

I know that’s not what you want to hear when you’re booked for a 3 hour paid performance. But singing on seriously irritated vocal folds can sideline you for weeks. And that is never worth one night.

Short term pain. Long term gain. Protect your instrument. 🎙️

This is one of the 5 questions I answer in my latest podcast episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/vocal-tips-in-10-with-amber-mogg-cathey/id1771934436?i=1000772031892

None of us will ever truly know what we sound like to other people. 🤯

You hear your voice from inside your body. Everyone else hears it from outside. That’s why recordings always feel so jarring — it’s not your “real” voice, it’s just the one everyone else has always known.

But with this quick tip, you can get as close as possible to hearing yourself the way others do. 🎙️

Drop a 🙋 in the comments if you never quite recognize your own voice in recordings!

Tomorrow I’m releasing my podcast episode where I answer the 5 questions I get asked most as a vocal coach with 20+ years of experience — this is just one of them. Don’t miss the other four! 🎧

If you’ve ever recorded yourself and thought “why do I sound so nasal?” — you’re not alone.

Nasality isn’t a flaw. Plenty of successful artists have it and it works beautifully for them.

But if YOU want to play with it, here are a couple of tips to experiment with. Your voice, your rules. 🎤 Save this for your next practice session.

A peek inside a 1-on-1 lesson with the incredible - pop soul singer-songwriter. đź‘€

Why is a pop soul singer-songwriter doing jazz scatting? Because challenging yourself outside your comfort zone – even just at the edges of your genre – only spices up your own sound and skills. The ear training, the agility, the musicality you develop? It all goes straight back into your unique sound.

This is what artistic development looks like. And yes - we celebrate when it comes together like this!

Comment VOCAL and I’ll send you the link to the Vocal Pro Collective. 🎤

People don’t just hear your voice.

They feel your tension, confidence, freedom, emotion, and nervous system, too.

That’s why singing is never just about technique.

In this clip, licensed hypnotherapist shares why the internal state we bring into singing directly affects how audiences experience us – and why doing the internal work can completely change the way people connect to your voice.

Tongue circles are one of my favorite ways to release tongue tension and check in on how everything is feeling before you sing.

A tight tongue means less freedom — in your sound, your articulation, your range, your agility, and your stamina. Most singers don’t even realize how much tension they’re carrying until they start paying attention to it.

If they feel tiring or sore, your tongue is telling you something. Listen to it.
