LEO Flint Lecturers have voted to ratify their Salary Re-opener Agreement with the University of Michigan! Lecturers on that campus will receive additional 1% annual increases for the remaining two years of the contract, on top of the 3% annual increases previously bargained for in the 2024-2028 Collective Bargaining Agreement. This would not have been possible without the engagement of our members and allies. Thanks to all who signed on to our support letter to administration, attended our Bargaining Kick-off rally, and made calls into Chancellor Alexander's office demanding recognition of the hard work of Flint lecturers. We will continue the fight in the coming years for all three campuses and look forward to standing with you. Read more at leounion.org/blog! Solidarity!

As we celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, we also contend with the reality of a democracy in decline. Civic education is crucial for all students to learn to fight for their rights and take on their responsibilities so that we may keep our republic. In the Summer 2026 issue of American Educator, learn how civic programs empower students to solve problems in their communities and how educators can help students grapple with big ideas that bring civic learning to life.

Also in this issue: AFT President Randi Weingarten outlines a plan for boosting student learning in the AI era; educators and researchers show how to support reading and math instruction and student well-being; and AFT-Wisconsin president Jon Shelton shares how his union members are fighting for their voices to be heard.
