Since 1999, June has been recognized as Pride Month. Selected to honor those that officially began the fight for equality during the Stonewall Riots on June 28th, 1969, this month serves as a time to remember and continue the “march” forward. At a greater risk for bullying, harassment, rejection, isolation, anxiety, depression, absenteeism, substance abuse, homelessness, and even su***de, it is critical that we support LGBTQ youth. Supportive adults and safe spaces are protective factors that can reduce the potential for negative impacts to this population of youth. To anyone that identifies within the LGBTQ community, Girls Empowered celebrates you!

Meet our Camp Facilitators. Each day this week, we will be introducing one of our professional staff:

Last but certainly not least is Cara Harvey. She says, "I'm so excited to be part of the summer program because getting to connect with girls and help them grow in confidence and leadership is so important! Girls who believe in themselves can change the world!"

Cara is an educator, life coach, and dedicated Girl Scout leader passionate about helping women and girls reach their fullest potential. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and a Master’s degree in Education, and spent almost a decade in the classroom before transitioning her focus to coaching and leadership development. When in the classroom, she worked in a variety of roles and founded a student leadership program and a mentorship program.

As the CEO and founder of A Purpose Driven Mom, Cara supports busy moms in creating balance, achieving their goals, and living with intention through personalized coaching, community programs, and workshops. In addition to her professional work, she brings her enthusiasm for empowerment and growth to her Girl Scout troop, where she fosters confidence, teamwork, and leadership in young girls.

She lives in Bensalem with her family and, as a mom of three (ages 19, 10, and 8), is deeply committed to empowering today’s youth to cultivate courage, confidence, and self-belief.

Today, let's meet our Program Director and Social Media Coordinator, Crystal Higgins. Crystal says, "My favorite part about facilitating camp is seeing repeat camp participants, those that start with Camp Girl Power, progress to the Girls Leadership Program, and sometimes even get chosen to later intern. However, I am also very excited to meet some new faces at camp this summer and have some fun in a new camp space: The Yoga Gnome!"

Crystal has worked with Girls Empowered since 2022. She holds a Master’s Degree in Elementary School Counseling from Gwynedd Mercy University. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Temple University. Crystal also works for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bucks County.
