We organize not only for a dignified life for ourselves, but for the right to stay on and care for the land that we call home, and grow the community we imagine which includes the land and all its inhabitants. This is why one of La Mujer Obera’s main priorities is to re-learn our place in the ecosystem, viewing ourselves as part of instead of separate or above the land and those we share the land with. Families of the Barrio Chamizal gather, celebrate, plant and harvest throughout the neighborhood in parks, homes and La Mujer Obrera’s communal spaces to care for and share our knowledge of our urban desert ecosystem.

La Mujer Obrera was founded in 1981 as an organization of women workers in Barrio Chamizal, once known as El Paso’s garment district, to imagine and enact a vision for a dignified life for workers and their families. Four decades later, a lot has changed but we continue to carry forward this vision of a dignified life for the families of the Chamizal.
