☀️ Simple Summer Learning Activities for PreK–2 Children ☀️
Summer learning does not have to feel like schoolwork! Some of the best learning happens through simple everyday moments. 💛
Here are a few easy ways to keep young children learning this summer:
📚 Read together daily — even 10–15 minutes helps build vocabulary and comprehension.
🧺 Let children help with cooking and baking — measuring ingredients teaches early math skills naturally.
🌿 Go on nature walks and talk about what you see — colors, sounds, insects, flowers, weather, and patterns all build observation and language skills.
🎲 Play board games and card games — they strengthen memory, attention, problem-solving, and social skills.
✏️ Encourage drawing, storytelling, and pretend play — creativity builds literacy and communication skills.
💦 Most importantly: keep learning joyful, hands-on, and connected to real life.
Children learn best when they feel safe, connected, curious, and confident. 🌟

Summer is a wonderful time for PreK children to learn through play, exploration, and everyday life experiences!
Here are a few simple ways to build early learning skills at home:
⭐ Read together every day
Even 10–15 minutes helps build vocabulary and listening skills.
⭐ Practice counting naturally
Count toys, snacks, flowers, steps, or stuffed animals.
⭐ Strengthen fine motor skills
Playdough, coloring, painting, stickers, and child-safe scissors all help little hands grow stronger for writing.
⭐ Explore outside
Nature walks, water play, gardening, and observing bugs or birds encourage curiosity and science skills.
⭐ Sing songs and rhymes
Rhyming helps prepare children for reading success later on.
⭐ Encourage imaginative play
Pretend kitchens, puppets, dress-up, and storytelling all build language and social-emotional skills.
Learning in PreK should feel joyful, engaging, and connected to real life. 💛

Five minutes seems almost too small to matter. But the math is staggering. Reading to your child for just five minutes daily exposes them to over one million more words by age five than children who are not read to. And every single one of those words is actively constructing neural architecture that will determine how they think, communicate and learn for the rest of their life.
A child's brain builds itself from what it hears most. Television delivers passive language at a flat emotional frequency. Background noise delivers chaos. But a parent reading aloud delivers something irreplaceable. Varied vocabulary. Narrative structure. Emotional nuance carried through tone and expression. The brain receives this as rich, layered input and responds by building denser, more complex neural connections in the language and comprehension centers.
Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics found children read to daily enter school with vocabularies significantly larger than peers who were not. But beyond vocabulary, these children show stronger imagination, longer attention spans and deeper capacity for empathy, because story teaches the brain to inhabit perspectives beyond its own experience.
Five minutes is not a small commitment. It is a daily deposit into a brain still deciding what it will become. What your child hears most in these early years is what their brain uses to build itself. Choose those words deliberately.

With Georgia now requiring kindergarten attendance statewide, I know some parents may be feeling nervous about whether their child is “ready.”
As someone who has worked in early childhood and elementary education for many years, I just want to encourage parents that children develop at different rates. Kindergarten readiness is not about perfection — it’s about building foundational skills, confidence, and support.
I’m curious what other local parents think about the new requirement. Are you supportive of it? Concerned? Somewhere in the middle?

Georgia is making Kindergarten mandatory beginning this school year.
For many families, this may bring up questions like:
“Is my child ready?”
“What skills should they know?”
“What if they struggle with attention or learning?”
“What if they are already behind in reading?”
As an educator with 20+ years of experience in early childhood and elementary education, I want parents to know this:
✨ Children do not need to be perfect before entering kindergarten.
They need support, encouragement, routine, and strong foundational skills.
Early literacy, number sense, listening skills, confidence, and emotional readiness matter more than perfection.
At Silver Star’s Educational Support
, I help children build those foundations in a calm, supportive environment through:
📚 Reading support
🔤 Phonics & early literacy
➕ Early math skills
⭐ ADHD learning support
💙 Confidence-building encouragement
Helping every child shine with confidence. ✨

📖 Is your child struggling with reading?
Here’s one simple sign to look for:
👉 They can read the words… but don’t understand what they read.
This is called reading comprehension, and it’s one of the most common challenges I see.
The good news? It can improve with the right support.
I help students slow down, think about what they read, and build understanding step by step—without frustration.
💙 You’re not alone in this.
💙 Your child can grow.
