A special testimony from SMA's Chaplain, Father Gatien.
When I celebrated the Pentecost Mass, I met an 87-year-old woman, Dr. Lynn Gray, was received into the Catholic Church, confirmed, and received her First Holy Communion during the celebration (Formerly a Protestant Christian).
After Mass, as is customary, I stood outside greeting parishioners. I noticed two women standing patiently with their wheeled mobility aids, waiting to speak with me. One of them was Dr. Lynn Gray, accompanied by her sponsor, Pat Egsieker.
As I approached and greeted them, Dr. Lynn shared that they specifically wanted to thank me for a book I had written, which became instrumental in her journey to the Catholic faith.
Pat explained that she met Lynn at a nursing home. Over time, they began sharing their faith together. Pat introduced Lynn to the Bible and other Catholic materials and connected her with the parish through Fr. Valery Akoh and the Adult Faith Formation Coordinator, Bonnie Kaplan.
Bonnie later gave Dr. Lynn a copy of my book, Handbook for Faith Formation: Building a Basic Catholic Identity.
With great joy and emotion, Dr. Lynn told me that if she is Catholic today, it is thanks to that book, which she had read over and over again—more than twice. She said the book is straightforward, simple, and gave her everything she needed to understand the Catholic faith in a summary form. She then asked if we could take a (this) picture together.
At that moment, my heart was overwhelmed with gratitude and humility. It was one of the most moving testimonies I have received and a powerful realization of the very purpose for which the book was written: to help souls encounter Christ, promote basic knowledge of the faith and bring forth missionary disciples.
“Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to Your name give the glory.” (Psalm 115:1)
