Thanks for the memories. We are officially closed.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that after 13 years of sharing the joy of martial arts with our community I have decided to close our school. Our official last day of class will be Thursday December 20th.

Those of you who know me know the incredible changes that have taken place in my life in these last 18 months. And the new duties and responsibilities brought on by those changes now make it almost impossible to continue operating the Fayette Academy of Martial Arts.

There is some good news for a few of you though. At this time, John Perez our Krav Maga instructor and Nick Wilson our Jeet Kune Do instructor are in talks with the owner of CrossFit Fayette about continuing to teach for him.

I don't know where these talks will go but at least there is some hope that these classes will continue.

I just want to say how much I appreciate each and every one of you. All the students who have crossed my path have had a profound influence on my life and I am honored to have had the opportunity however brief to train, instruct, and share in your lives.

Truly this has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

It is my hope that in 3-5 years my life will settle down enough that I can again look at teaching and sharing, but who knows what the future holds.

In the mean time:

Train Hard. Train Safe. Train for Life.

God bless each one of you and know that it is my prayer that you NEVER have to use what I have taught you.

Early Wednesday morning my family said good bye to John E. Lunsford Jr.
While he spent the last several years struggling with back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, heart problems, lung problems, and stomach problems, my family is encouraged knowing he now stands Healed, Painless, and Perfected in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He was a proud graduate of Georgia Tech and was ever the patriot.
People often would find themselves speaking of his gruff demanding exterior in the same breath that they mentioned his incredible generosity and his huge heart.
Most knew him as John, some knew him as "Boss", some as "Junior", others as "Uncle Bubba", while a select few knew him as "Big Daddy". However for me and my sister he always was and always will be Dad.
We will miss you dad but I know I will see you again.
I love you.

Fayetteville woman scares off likely carjacker/robber - The Citizen 01/11/2018

Awareness is a learned skill. You need to train and practice to make yourself aware of what is going on around at all times.

Trust me, if you are not paying attention to your circumstances and surroundings there is a better than average chance someone else is paying attention to you.

Fayetteville woman scares off likely carjacker/robber - The Citizen An alert driver took matters into her own hands after being followed home from the grocery store. Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb said deputies at 7:08 p.m. on Jan. 5 were dispatched to a residence off Ginger Cake Road north of Fayetteville after a woman was followed home from a local grocery stor...

Think you could defend yourself against knife attack? 11/15/2017

For those of you who think you might want to bring a gun to a knife fight.

A firearm is great, IF you already have it out and pointed at your attacker. But IF your firearm is still in your holster when your attacker comes at you, the result will more than likely NOT be in your favor.

Think you could defend yourself against knife attack? Police training video shows how wrong you could be. Hope USA's libs don't see this, otherwise they'll go crazy to get knives registered and banned.

What is the difference between Arnis, Kali and Eskrima? 10/27/2017

The Filipino Martial Arts (FMA),like other Martial Arts, is a tree with many branches. The terms Kali, Arnis and Escrima or Eskrima, have been confusing to some who wish to understand what the differences between these arts are.

The truth is is that they are all part of the FMA (Filipino Martial Arts). Escrima/ Eskrima, is from a Spanish term which means ‘fencing’. Its influence was more from the central part of the Philippines. Arnis, which is also a Spanish term actually was derived from the term ‘ Arnes de mano’ which translated to ‘ armour of the hands’ referring to the warrior’s ability to protect themselves with their weapon. It was later shortened to the term we now know it to be, ‘Arnis’. Arnis was known as the term used for this FMA in the northern parts of the Philippines. Kali is a Filipino term which was commonly known in the southern part of the Philippines and a common phrase used among Filipino Martial Arts. For the most part, these are all the same martial art. The masters of these arts influenced each other and thus there are many similarities. The differences usually depend on the instructor.

Some of the differences between them are ex*****on of techniques, difference in stances, speed versus power techniques, light sticks versus heavier sticks, long sticks versus short sticks etc. There are more similarities than differences. All three train stick fighting, edged weapons defense, daggers and empty hand self defense techniques as well. Each have their pattern sets and each emphasize self defense techniques. No matter what name you choose to use to describe this Filipino Martial Art, one thing is for sure, its a mesmerizing martial art to watch, fun to learn and its practical applications for self defense are among some of the best in the weapon self defense.
