Piper and her little nuggies

Piper has been a top notch first time mom so far. Her 3 little nuggets are doing great!

All of the homesteads chickens enjoyed some raw goats milk today which is incredibly important when building gut health to fight off any bacteria that is living in the soil because no matter what, there is always something in the soil that can harm one of them. Within the first 48 hours of life, chicks are offered raw goats milk and again at 1 week and again around 5 weeks. Before they begin to free range with the flock, they are offered it again and this happens between weeks 10 and 20. Once free ranging, monthly offerings of whole milk occur along with the occasional spoiling with raw goats milk during hatching season.

Cher and her 3 babies.

Piper and Cher have successfully hatched some babies. Daisy and Phoebe however did not succeed and are being pulled from their nests. Fingers crossed I can avoid putting them into broody jail.

Sir Van Stormy III has taken over the flock as head rooster and with 4 out of the 6 chicks hatched yesterday belonging to him, it is safe to say he wants me to see everything he has to offer genetically.

Iris Rose Osbourne was our first Van baby and she has been nothing short of amazing personality wise as well as foraging desires. She is a great egg producer, just smaller in size than I would like for meat purposes, however the cockerels produced by Van from Buffy's current clutches are huge and that gives me hope that size will be more with the cockerels than the pullets and I will be able to breed for larger hens on a taller frame by taking the largest pullets back to Van.

Can't believe their first adventure was almost 4 weeks ago! Abd to think they moved into the grow out pen today!

It was moving day for Buffy, the how bout those cowboys, and the writers guild. Mama is showing them the run and hopefully will put all 27 to bed in the coop attached. Preliminary counts are very depressing on the pullet front, but that means a positive for our freezer.

*Buffy tried extremely hard to get all the babies to understand where bed was. Sadly, about a dozen or so of them were sharing 1 braincell and couldn't figure it out. 30 minutes later plus a lot of sweat (from me 😥) and all babies were able to be snug with mama.*

Curious babies ❤️ 💙 but why so many have to present cockerel vibes. I know we said this was for freezer and egg layer replacements, but man couldn't I get a few more pullets?!

The leader of the chicken army is currently training them to do the stand and stare. Looks like these 3 have a pretty good idea. Any good leader makes sure their troops have support. With unlimited piggy back rides, Buffy provides!
