Maria Montessori refers to ages 3-6 as the absorbent mind because they observe the environment and explore through their senses which leads to the desire for physical and biological independence. During lessons in the classroom, the teacher explains, shows and directs. Then each student is allowed to participate individually. With supervision, the student is then allowed to explore the subject themselves with concious effort at their pace of reasoning leading to full understanding.
